In the Bible, spaces where people met with God, where angels were present, or where monuments were built to commemorate God’s faithfulness were considered sacred. Today, sacred spaces can be anywhere. In a church or temple, in a natural setting that may have a spiritual connation, like mountains or a river, or even in a quiet corner of your home…anywhere where you feel safe, at peace, and a deep connection to God.
Do you need a sacred space to call your own? The answer is, of course, up to you. But we believe having a tangible place where you can feel a divine awe-inspiring peace, a place free from worry or distraction where you can gain strength, clarity, or feel rejuvenated is a blessing of the highest order. We know God is everywhere all the time, but there’s something special about dedicating a place to connecting with Him.
What are the characteristics of sacred spaces? They’re peaceful, tranquil, uncomplicated, and consecrated. Due to their inherent safety and security, they invite vulnerability and self-exploration. They inspire awe, reverence, and deep spiritual connection. As Joseph Campbell once said, sacred spaces are where you go to find yourself again and again. They can be natural or man-made. Many people find gardens to be especially inviting as sacred spaces, or forests, or beaches. If you’re blessed enough to have regular access to natural beauty such as this, be very grateful. But if you don’t have natural surroundings that speak to you in this way, you can create your own.
What should you consider when creating your own sacred space? Start with your intention for the space…what do you want to do there? Pray, meditate, read your Bible? Whatever your intention is, make sure the space supports it. The area doesn’t have to be large. Most of us don’t have an entire room we aren’t already using, so usually a home-based sacred space is simply a corner or small part of a room. Comfort, peace, and inspiration are high priorities, so perhaps include a soft chair, blankets, pillows, your Bible, a candle, soft lighting, a meditation cushion or mat, and art related to people or places that inspire you or evoke serenity and joy. If you want privacy, then choose an area where you can close a door or somehow achieve the seclusion you desire.
Choose colors to evoke the mood you want to have when you’re there. For example, if, as many people do, you intend to use this space for peace, comfort, and a grounding spiritual connection, choose soothing colors such as soft blue or green, or grounding earthy colors such as deep greens or browns, or terracotta. Some people choose to create an altar of sorts; something as simple as a small table can fit the bill. You may want to have soft lighting and gentle, relaxing music playing that says “spirituality” to you. If the space provides natural light, consider including some plants, both for oxygenation and to evoke a sense of connection to the natural world. Finally, ensure that when you come into your sacred space, you leave any negative energy or thoughts elsewhere. We’ve probably all walked into a room where there’s recently been a heated argument and felt the tension hanging in the air. That wasn’t your imagination. It’s a real thing and not what you want for an area you’re using for comfort and peace. So, shrug off any anger or frustration and enter only when you’re ready and open to a healing, divine connection.
Lastly, develop a ritual that marks the transition from the outside world into your private, sacred space. Some people bring flowers as an offering. Some light a candle. Some get on their knees and pray. It can be anything that helps you emotionally and spiritually leave all the world’s “noise” outside of your space and focus your heart and mind on God and whatever answers or feelings you’re seeking.
