Ask Big, and You Just Might Get It!

In a book about Walt Disney’s life, the author tells a story about Walt’s practice of meeting with his board of directors. He’d throw out big ideas, and if the board said, “Hey, that’s a great idea! Let’s do that!” Walt would say, “Nope, that’s not what we’re going to do.” But if everyone at the table said, “Walt, that’s impossible! No one’s ever done that before,” Walt would say, “Great, then let’s do that!” He was an impossibility thinker. We can be impossibility thinkers, too. In fact, at GVEC we believe that’s what God wants for us. If our hopes and dreams seem outside the realm of possibility, then the only way they can happen is through our faith in Him. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Will we always get everything we ask for? Maybe, maybe not. The ultimate decision is His. His will, His plan, His timing. But we’re a lot more likely to get it if we ask Him than if we don’t. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be open to you.” One hundred times in the Bible God says ask, seek, request, or inquire. Thirty-three times He tells us to ask Him for stuff!

Many years ago, McDonald’s trained their staff to ask customers a simple question: “Would you like some fries with that order?” That one simple change made the company an additional $20 million the first year! Ah, the power of asking! Why do you think we don’t ask God for big things? Is it shame, guilt, insecurity, thinking we’re unworthy? Are you asking God for gas or to pay off the car?

We also must be clear about that which we’re asking. There’s a big difference in asking God for “more money” and asking him for “$10,000 in my bank account by the end of the year.” Or how about asking God for “more energy” versus asking Him for the “energy and discipline to get up 30 minutes earlier to exercise before work.” See the difference? Even more powerful would be creating images of your goals and desires, like a vision board where you post images of the new things you want in your life so you can see them every day and be reminded of your vision.

Joyce Meyer says we need to stop saying “just” prayers. “Lord, if you’ll just give me a little relief from my back pain.” Or “Father, if you’ll just help me feel less depressed.” Stop praying wimpy prayers! Instead, pray big, bold prayers: “Lord, I want to be pain-free by the end of this week.” Or “Father, I want to feel happy, joyful, and grateful at the end of every day.” Bottom line:  don’t ask for things you think are possible. Like Walt Disney, go after things that seem impossible. How might this apply to your experience at GVEC? The next time you’re setting your intention for your EESystem session, believe for things that make God look like God. Wouldn’t it be better to ask Him for big things and get 50% then not ask and get 100%?
